Alpha
Gamma Sigma Honor Society
West
Valley College, Gamma Iota Chapter
Meeting
Minutes
Wednesday,
February 13, 2008
John welcomed those in attendance, and
began the meeting by suggesting we play an icebreaker called “The
Name Game.”
After that, Laura spoke about the
State Convention. As you may know, Alpha Gamma Sigma is a statewide
club with chapters at most California community colleges. The State
Convention is an opportunity for all chapters to assemble and
participate in a weekend of seminars, activities, and fun. Best of
all, this year’s State Convention is conveniently located in San
Jose at the Doubletree Hotel, and will take place during spring break
from April 4 through 6.
Laura went on to speak about the State
Scholarships. In terms of the State Scholarships, if you will have
60 transferable units by the end of the semester and you are a
continuing member, you may qualify to apply for these scholarships.
There are two categories of awards: academic and community service.
For the academic awards, you need to have a 3.75 grade point average
or higher. For the community service awards, you need to have a 3.0
grade point average or higher. Please refer to our website for more
information about requirements and applications, and remember three
copies of application packets are due to advisors on February 20,
2008, before or at 3:30 p.m. Do not hesitate to contact Laura Sylvan
or advisors about any questions or concerns.
Next, John spoke about the opportunity
to apply for Coordinator positions. Whatever your interest, chances
are there is a Coordinator position for you. Currently, the Blood
Drive Coordinator position is already occupied, but Activities,
Community Service, Fundraising, Publicity, Web Historian, and State
Convention Coordinator positions are available. Please refer to
http://ags.sylvan.com for Coordinator descriptions and applications,
and remember applications are due to advisors before or at 3:30 p.m.
on February 20, 2008.
Subsequently, John spoke about the
First Annual Honors Symposium to be hosted at Stanford University.
Registration to attend this event is free, and the form needs to be
submitted by March 28, 2008. The Symposium will take place April 18,
2008, and many AGS members are already planning to attend. For more
information, please refer to the website
http://admissions.stanford.edu/hrs.
Finally, Tina spoke about applications
for membership. She specified the application, a copy of your full
transcript off WebAdvisor, and $20 are due to advisors. Also, please
cut off and keep the bottom portion of the application for your
records. In addition, if you plan to apply for an exemption, all
forms and supporting documents need to be turned in to Kara. This
means that if you plan to apply for an exemption due to taking
eighteen units, you need to turn in a copy of your class schedule to
Kara. Applications and points exemption forms are due on February
20, 2008 before or at 3:30 pm.
John closed the meeting.
*PLEASE NOTE: February 20, 2008 is “Due Day.” All
applications, exemption forms, and scholarship applications are due
next week before or at 3:30 p.m.
