Alpha Gamma Sigma Honor Society
West Valley College, Gamma Iota Chapter
Meeting Minutes
Wednesday, November 7, 2007
Laura commenced this week's meeting, and introduced James, a guest
speaker from ICC.
James made an announcement concerning the public bus system. According
to James, VTA is planning to cut services of the 27-line bus. This bus
now goes to and from Santa Theresa, and if VTA proceeds with the cut, the
bus will no longer come to West Valley. Instead, VTA has proposed using
a community bus, which would add up to 45 minutes of commute time for
those who rely on the 27-line bus. James is asking for signatures on a
petition that is designed to persuade VTA that the 27-line bus is
important to our students.
John introduced a game called "Two Truths and a Lie."
Brittany gave a Teacher Appreciation Dinner wrap-up. She said the dinner
went well, and she appreciates all the help that she received. Also, she
encourages everyone to send thank you notes to the businesses that
provided donations for the event.
Laura read a letter from the American Red Cross. In summation, the
letter specified that we managed to obtain 59 productive units of blood,
and that our efforts may have saved up to 175 lives. GREAT JOB,
MARKIS!!!!! Furthermore, we now have a date for the next blood drive,
which is scheduled for May 7, 2008.
Tina spoke about two upcoming items: Gamma Iota scholarships and the
election for spring officers.
In terms of the scholarships, awards are the result of our fundraising
efforts. Most everyone will be eligible for these awards, so please
consider applying. Tina will email the scholarship forms after the
meeting. The form and supporting documents are due on November 21, 2007.
You can drop your scholarship package off at Tina's office by 3:00 pm on
the due date or you may submit it at the meeting.
In terms of the elections, they will be held on November 21, 2007. Every
position is up for grabs (except for webmaster, which is an appointed
position). Remember, the only requirement is that you must have been a
member of AGS for one semester (including this semester) and that you are
able to make all of our meetings. If you are interested in a position,
you may nominate yourself or you may have someone nominate you for the
position. Nominees will give a brief speech about what qualifies them
for the position. If you are planning to run, you might consider
preparing a few words to make your speech persuasive. After all nominees
have given their speeches, AGS members will cast their vote by private ballot.
Kara spoke about the last bake sale, See's candy, and Chevy's night.
In terms of the bake sale on November 13th and 14th, Kara has the sign up
sheets if you are interested in confirming your time behind the table.
Remember, if you are planning to make baked goods, cookies need to be
home made and about three inches in diameter. Also, they should be
individually wrapped, and you may consider labeling your items.
In terms of See's candy, remember orders need to be turned in on November
21, 2007. There is no limit to the amount of points you can receive for
this event. Although, once you have met your fundraising points, the
additional points revert to general points. Checks should be made out to
Alpha Gamma Sigma. Orders will be available on November 28, 2007.
Nick stated that Laser Quest was cancelled due to lack of feedback.
Perhaps we will try to do it next semester.
Logan talked about the Toy Drive. Remember, unwrapped brand new toys are
due on November 21, 2007. Please bring receipts to confirm proof of
purchase and price. It is one community service point for every $20.00
worth of toys.
Annalise gave a points update. Everything she has in on the website,
except for the blood drive. This information will be added by Friday.
Laura mentioned the Honor Symposium being hosted at Stanford on April 18,
2007. Honors students will be given the opportunity to give a short
presentation at the symposium. If you are interested in more
information, contact Laura for a flyer concerning the event.
John asked for people's feedback on outside activities our club could
participate in. Simply send him an email with ideas.
Brittany said she was so inspired by the results of the Teacher
Appreciation Dinner that she has decided to organize a picnic/ potluck at
a park near her home. More details to follow.
Laura adjourned the meeting.
